COMPLICATION FOR ACID REFLUX

Acid reflux occurs when acid and other material in stomach back - up reflux in to the esophagus, muscular tube that carries food from throat to the stomach. Acid reflux is associated with several unpleasant symptoms. It is observed that the acid reflux do not occur every day, they may also disappear for few weeks, but eventually come back with many severe complications. Once the acid reflux is diagnosed with the complications it is considered lifelong condition and should be treated.

Complication caused by Acid reflux

1. Barrett's Esophagus- It occurs when the tissue lining the esophagus actually gets changed into the type of tissue that is found in the intestine through a process called internal metaplasia. Barrett's esophagus generally does not cause symptoms of itself, but having Barrett's esophagus makes a person much more likely to get esophageal cancer. The only way to detect Barrett's esophagus at time is through an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and bioscopy. There is no cure for Barrett's esophagus other than the removal of the esophagus.

2. Esophageal Cancer- it is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissue of the esophagus. There is an association between gastro esophageal reflux diseases (GERD) and andocarcinoma type of esophageal cancer. If a patient has Barrett's esophagus, a doctor will need to do endoscopy periodically to screen for the changes.

3. Erosive Esophagus- Esophagitis is an inflammation and swelling of the esophagus, and is most often caused by an acid containing stomach contents refluxing back up into the esophagus.

4. Esophageal Strictures- An Esophageal structure is a gradual narrowing of the esophagus, which can lead to swallowing difficulties.

Overcome the Complication

Acid reflux can be extremely damaging, so learning how to limit nighttime reflux can do much to prevent complication. There are certain foods that have almost no chance of causing the acid reflux and there are others that should not be eaten at all if acid reflux is to be avoided. The most important thing to prevent acid reflux recompilation is to talk to their doctor about their acid reflux. A doctor may prescribe medications, either prescription or over- the - counter, or they may suggest lifestyle changes.
