Hemorrhoid doctor

When to see the doctor:

One of the most prominent symptoms of hemorrhoid of internal type is rectal bleeding. But this symptom can be the messenger of serious conditions and diseases also. Such a case needs immediate medical attention as the bleeding can account for gastrointestinal tract include colorectal or anal cancer. In some cases it is seen that the in the initial stages of the onset of the hemorrhoid the sufferers may observe marked changes in the bowel habits. The signs are passing of passing black, tarry or maroon stools and the possible chances are that there may be extensive internal bleeding somewhere in the digestive tract. Lightheadedness, dizziness or faintness may also follow up due to internal bleeding and emergency care is advised in such cases.

The work of the doctor:

The basic function of medical practitioner is the determination of the hemorrhoids, its classification and causes and medical treatment. He can do this simply by examining the patient through careful examination. In cases of internal hemorrhoids it is seen that the doctor may conduct a rubber gloved finger but even this procedure is not totally inconclusive due to the fact that internal hemorrhoids are often too soft to detect by a rectal examination. In such conditions the doctor generally uses an anoscope, proctoscope or sigmoidoscope to examine the lower portion of your colon and rectum. If the cases are more severe the doctor may also carry out a thorough and extensive examination of the entire colon and rectum using a flexible fiber-optic colonoscope. The main objective is to help exclude bleeding lesions not only in the rectum but also in the entire colon.

Medical treatments recommended by a doctor:

In cases of mild hemorrhoids the doctors may suggest over the counter creams ointments or pads containing witch hazel or a topical anti-inflammatory agent containing hydrocortisone. Surgical procedures are undertaken if there is a clot formation within an external hemorrhoid and it can be easily removed with a simple incision. Surgery is also done if one is having large hemorrhoids. Generally surgery is done with the application of either local anesthetic combined with sedation, a spinal anesthetic, or general anesthetic. Other than surgery there are also a number of ways to treat hemorrhoids. The list includes ligation of the hemorrhoids, also called as the band therapy, the Sclerotherapy and incision with infrared light.
